Evening Herald on Duathlon Race 4

This article on race 4 of the Dublin Duathlon Series is reprinted from the Evening Herald on Thursday 15 July with the permission of journalist Lindie Naughton.

"Despite the close attention of marathon specialist Gary Crossan, Belpark's Brian Crinion won the fourth in the Dublin City Duathlon series; a two-mile run, 10-mile cycle and two-mile run, in the Phoenix Park..."

From the gun, Crinion, who recently returned from the World Duathlon Championships in Belgium, took the lead, trying to shake off some of the faster runner.s

But Crossan quickly reeled him in and set off on the cycle with about 30 seconds to spare. It wasn't enough and by the time the first of five laps was over, the lead had exchanged hands again, with Crinion back in front and Crossan holding off Liam Dunne - a promising young triathlete from Rathfarnham - for second place.

Despite Crossan's best efforts, Crinion held on to his lead on the second run to win with a time of 39 mins 16 sees, with Crossan 53 seconds behind and Dunne third.

he women's race was even closer, with Jenny Fay from Sandymount edging ahead of Loraine Creane and Elena Mastova, a former Olympic biathlete, on the cycle.

Unfortunately, she couldn't maintain her momentum and on the second run was passed by her two rivals. Creane won in 46.33, with Mastova just six seconds adrift.

The final race in the series takes place on Wednesday August 4.

At the Holten European Continental Cup race in Holland, Brian Campbell finished 28th and Trevor Woods 35th.

In Carrick-on-Suir (500m swim, 15k cycle, 5k run) a day later, Woods beat 3Dtri's Eanna McGrath to win the latest National Series round, with Lisa Higgins of Limerick beating Tsunami's Anna Frankland in the womens race.

Next Saturday's Tri to Beat Cancer at the Lilliput Adventure Centre, near Mullingar (2.0) celebrates the life of its founder, Anne Burns who died this year.

She has left a lasting legacy with this sprint triathlon, which over the past three years has already raised over ?500,000 for cancer research at St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin.

Teams at ?450 and individuals at ?250 are invited to attempt the 750m swim in Lough Ennell, followed by a 20km cycle and 5k run.
