With 140 entries at the May event, numbers are up significantly from last year, so the prize money has been similarly increased. Enough in fact to attract professional Ironman Triathlete, Peter Kern from Germany, who has his eyes set on the course record bonus. Peter has been racing as a pro in Australia since 2003, recently finishing 12th in Ironman Arizona. He last raced here in 2003, taking 2nd place in the Irish Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships. The question posed is “Will a long distance athlete like Peter have the speed to hold off the domestic contingent?” The domestic competition will be lead out by last months winner, Aidan Woods, who’s just back from a top 50 finish in the European Duathlon Championships, Peter Savage fresh from his win in the Limavady Triathlon, and the two students just finished their exams and who raced for Ireland at Under 23 level last year, Liam Dunne & Bren Smith.
The target has been set down for the women’s race by Caroline Kearney, who smashed the course record last month, taking it down by 40seconds to 33min 40sec. Will Karen Bothwell or Anna Frankland be able to step up to this mark?
Entries will be taken on the night, with registration from 6:15 -7:15pm on the Main Avenue of the Phoenix Park between the Castleknock entrance and Arus An Uachtarain. Numbers are capped at 140 and free cycling waterbottles are only available to the first 50 entries, so get there early to ensure your place.
