Piranha Race Gear

Unlike previous years, this year ordering the club race gear has run late. It's been hard to come up with gear that can match the visual impact of Maria's designs from last year. We've now agreed on a supplier for the club gear. Paj has added a few photos of Eoin Flatz modeling a tri suit to his Flickr photo stream.

Once we finalise the artwork and provided we do so in the next week, the lead time is 45 days until delivery of the gear. However, since race gear (even subsidised race gear) is expensive we want to be certain that the design is satisfactory. Below are the design candidates. We would appreciate your feedback and any input, suggestions or even artwork designs (as usual, free gear for the successful designer)...

Post your comments here or email me with your suggestions at eimhin.mcmanus@alphyra.com and I'll include them below.

Hi,

The colours are great and will really standout. One thought on the piranhas though. Becuase there is so many of them it makes it appear like a background pattern. It's a shame because the piranha design is really nice, but it's getting lost. A "Can't see the pirahna for the shoal" type of thing!
I suspect they will stand out better and look smarter if there is just one big one and one small one on the front and one along the side. Same on the hat.

Hope that's helpful,

Jeremy

I think the logo is dated and if the gear was produced with the above design it wouldn't look great at all. I don't think I am alone in this view and thats why the posting has gone up to bring fresh ideas to the situation.

We are looking for new designs and quick..as time is running out. The gear can be fully customised..so instead of just plonking a fish on the front and back we can add background, colour tones etc to it to make it distinctive, unique and get our monies worth from the custom design process. There are many great example of cool gear on the web...if we measure twice and cut once here we could have a consistant and strong brand for years to comes..get it wrong and next year we will be changing again.

I totally agree with Ray, I was out with the manufacturers on Friday and have seen examples of full customisation of gear. One had a Manga-style Incredible hulk bursting through a brick wall on the front, bricks flying everywhere. The detail was incredible.

The sky is the limit to what we can have with the design process...is everyone happy with a plain 2 tone gear with a dated font? we could have water effect, colour fades, you name it.

To be honest I would rather we did this properly and had great gear than rush it and end up having to change again...

time is against us so please, get your crayons out.

I like the logo but having the shoal behind reminds me of drafting.

The colours I'm guessing are just a tester, we can't really go with orange for obvious reasons: New Gear
How about the red like on the top of the website logo?

"The colour red seems to give a winning edge to a competitor, especially in sports or athletic events. The discovery, Nature magazine says, comes from an analysis of combat events in last year's Olympic Games in Athens.

At four of these events (boxing, Taekwondo, Greco-Roman westling and freestyle wrestling), combatants were randomly assigned either blue or red outfits. Those wearing red won 55 percent of all competitions, report Russell Hill and Robert Barton of the University of Durham, UK. "

The researchers didn't say anything about how the chinese were just better athletes though.

I like the design in general although I agree with Ray on putting in the effort to get a design that will last the test of time.

I don't agree with the Red thing though it's not everyone's colour. Fine if REd comes into the design as part of the overall package but not if we're going to end up looking like fireman sam, all in red. Try to pick neutral enough colour like blue or another. Take for example the red piranha on the blue background at the top of this page; that's cool.

What happened to the logo above anyway? Its certainly distinctive and is strong enough to become indentified as our logo. We could even start our our clothes label.....come to think of it.....

Frank, I'm all on for the clothes brand. Any suggestions? Check out the LA Triathlon Club's gear section if you want to see how it's done.

I think the design looks great. What I would be concerned about is the quality, can we see the suits at a training session maybe? Eoin, great modelling, what did you think of the suit?

If opinions are being sought, I would also tend to think that we may be able to improve the design a bit. Like Wes, I don't think there can be a trace of orange! Why not go with something similar (or the same?) to the current design which everyone seems to like and is pretty cool. The Tsunami circular logo on the design could be replaced by a Piranha - maybe like the one on the website header which is pretty cool, or like the single Piranha on the new design shown above. The 'Prianha Tri' (or something similar) text could be written along the leg bit of the suit. We would then retain the predominantly blue shades which has more or less become the trademark of Piranha/Tsunami...

I like the idea of using last years design with the new name.
But If we do have time to come up with a blinder of a design I like the scales and the fish on this
