On Saturday 17th of March we're running our first Training Triathlon with the support of Westwood fitness club. The event has been designed to give beginners a chance to experience taking part in a triathlon in a controlled, non-competitive environment, where learning and getting used to transition are the main goals.

If you are a beginner, and would like to take part in the training tri, please post a comment on this story with your name.
There will also be a limited number places for intermediate, advanced members - as we have space in the pool for an hour. If you would like to help out as a marshall on the morning, please post up a comment as well. Thanks.

Event Outline
Participants will swim 500m (not 750m) in Westwood's 50m pool, transition to the cycle in the car park of the club, cycle 9Km towards Howth before making the turn back towards Westwood (18Km for the cycle in total). Participants will then run out of the Westwood gates towards the city, turning left after Annesley bridge, around Fairview park, back to the gate of Westwood and then completing one more lap of the same run course (staying on the path at all times) for a total run of 5.5Km. A full map of the course is shown below.

The outline timetable for the day is:
  • 7.20am: Transition open - participants should arrive at this time to set up their gear
  • 7.40am: Mandatory triathlon briefing - participants will be briefed on safety rules and the course.
  • 8.00am: Triathlon start - the first participants will enter the pool.
  • Once all participants have completed the course: Debrief and feedback session with refreshments in Westwood.

Run Course
2 laps

Points to Note
Participants should arrive with their swimming gear on, this will allow us to enter the pool bringing gear back and forward from the transition area to the changing rooms. The side door to the pool will be open, so we'll have direct access from the pool to the car-park. The event is non-competitive, and we want all participants to complete the course at whatever pace they feel comfortable with. The safety briefing beforehand is mandatory, so please show up with time to spare and pay attention to the marshalls' instructions. Most importantly, enjoy the morning - it's going to be great fun!

Hi Guys

Although the mini tri has been organised mainly for the benefit of the beginners, we have the pool for an hour so if you are an Intermediates or an Advanced member and you would like to particpate you should post up a reply , if there enough numbers, we were going to have three waves with a ten minutes gap between each wave.

Just wondering how come the swim has been shortened?

It would be good to have a 750m swim, if the bike and run are sprint distance...

I posted it up as 750m, but Liuwe's intention was that it would be 500m. If the training committee or Liuwe want to change it then I don't think there'll be a problem. It's their gig ;)

The swim has been shortened to be able to invite more atheletes, also of different standards. By shortening the swim we can keep the pool going smooth and allow for atheletes who need that little more time.

Hi. I'd definitely be up for participating in this. I'm waiting for membership to re-open, or for my request for affiliate membership to be accepted, & if either of those work, then please count me in if there are any spaces left.

Thanks.

Hi,

As far as I understand, the triathlon is a training event, run for full Piranha members only.  This is largely for insurance reasons.
