Volunteers DCT 2007

As you know the club will be hosting the Dublin City Triathlon on Saturday 25th August.Online entries are to open this week on Triathlon Ireland.Preparations are long underway.

As volunteer co-ordinator and on behalf of the DCT committee, I would like to point out to members that they are not permitted to take part in the race. The committee will allow a limited number of club entries for exceptional cases with the proviso that the club member will have to nominate two replacement volunteers .

We would ask that you show your support to your club by volunteering to help out either on race day or the day before race day or both. All volunteers will receive DCT 2007 sweatshirts and goody bags .

We will need at least 130 volunteers.Volunteers can include friends and family.Volunteers will be briefed and assigned roles closer to race day. No special skills are necessary. If you are available on either dates we would ask that you email volunteers@dublincitytriathlon.com and specify what days you are able to help out and whether you have any relevant skills.

Noelle

Just thinking through the non compete rule for Club members (ps I do not want to compete in the race particularly) ........

If, say, I am new to triathlon (in Dublin area) in 2008 and am deciding what club to join and joining Piranha means that I cannot compete in the only Premier League category 1 Olympic tri to be held in Dublin (and this event might be a national or regional championship, as it has been).....

Do I join Piranha or do I go somewhere else?

Hi Guys

Race director here. We discussed this rule on Monday. It was felt if Family & friends of members get up at 5.00 saturday morning to help out members who are available should show the same commitment. It was a new rule brought in this year as was voted unamiously by everyone on the race committee at the meeting.

As Noelle said we can make exceptions in extraordinary cases, if you feel you deserve this please email me at racedirector@dublincitytriathlon.com

I feel what makes Piranha the best club in Ireland is the amount of people who get involved and help out. Lets make DCT the Triathlon Ireland Best Race of the Year twice in a row.

I am really looking forward to DCT 2007 - I helped set up transition last year and worked in transition on the day; it was hard work but great fun. I learned a huge amount about how races work, about transition, equipment, tactics - just from watching the elites in action.

It'd be great to be able to show up to an organised race, take part, go home and not have to worry about all the behind-the-scenes stuff, but somebody has to organise these races.  DCT is our home race and we have a chance to all muck in, show off the club and have a cracking day. If you join any club you will be asked to help run an event or a race, we're no different so I don't think the fact that we run DCT puts us at a disadvantage at all - quite the opposite....we get to run a premier league event in the capital city. When people think of DCT, and what a cracking day it is, they will think of the club - and that is pretty cool.

More people helping means less work for all, and you will definitely enjoy the day in whatever capacity you help out in. Opting out of one race for the year is well worth it in my opinion.

I think it wasn't exactly a problem that was way out of control. Only a handful do it every year and most provide volunteers, putting an all out ban on it, in my eyes, is just a bit too much. Why this year?

It can be pointed out that the race director from this year raced last year, that the race director last year raced the year before and that the race director the year before raced it the year before that.

And you do get a kick out of helping out, i don't think anyone denies that, i helped out the year before last all day and the night before and enjoyed it, but i think changing the rules now to stop people racing when its usually only a handful out of maybe 100 members is wrong.

I know of at least 3 people, maybe even 4 (who I have been trying to recruit into the club) for whom a racing ban for DCT would be a huge obstacle in getting them to join. A terrrible unintended consequence I'd suggest.

I am more then happy to put myself forward as a volunteer and will do my best to get at least one other person to help out on the day as well but I wouldnt mind at some stage down the line to do this race! I reckon being a volunteer will help me to understand all the work that goes on in the background that you dont really appreciate when you just rock up for the race as a competitor and leave after you have completed the course

Also just to note, i had and have had no intention of entering this year, i just think the stance of the club is all wrong on the matter.

I've competed in the DCT for the last two years, before joining Piranha, and it is a great race. You also have the added attraction of friends and family being able to come and support - without having to get up at the crack of dawn. (Very important IMHO for kids to be able to see dad compete).

I will be volunteering this year as expected. This is our chance to 'give back' to the club.

My 2 cent on the subject is that why not have a second Dublin Tri? A north Dublin run by Piranha and a south Dublin run by another club (or some other body). One at the start of the season and another at the end. I believe Triathlon is now big enough to handle it. Is Piranha?

Ok the main problem seems to be lack of hands so maybe there could be a few rules to guaranty that, like first we recruit volunteers that WILL come and then give a designated No of places to piranhas for each year, Maybe say first year in Piranha you cant enter till you have done your duties and you can do it once every three years and if you take part you have provide 3 volunteers. If you fail to provide there should be some kind of penalty.  I think there is a way out of this but we need to sit down and work it out. I know that any profit goes towards our training but I to think that a total ban isn t the right way to go.When I joined I had one aim, DCT. I got the news and at first I was dissapointed. Then I saw all those great races around the counrty and I dont mind missing it. But at some point I would like to give it a shot AND still be in Piranha.

Alexi has the right idea, but getting penalized sounds harsh (40 lashes and walk the plank, Arr!). New members (depending on schedules and commitments) could be asked to volunteer for the first year and then the following be allowed to take part, surely with people who want to help out and their friends and family, would cover the majority of bodies needed and other members could then compete if they wish?  With Triathlon Ireland you can still Marshal/Referee a race and compete, so if members who did background work or say helping organize the race the day before, could then take part?  Its only one race and I’m nowhere experienced in events but there must be other big events in the country run by organizers and clubs who have the same set of rules?
