The John Davis Run 2008

For those of you who couldnt be there on Saturday for the 1st John Davis Run , it was a big success. Read on ......

Yes the race was a big succes. We were both very happy as first of all we got positive feedback regarding the race and its how it was a great tribute to the late John Davis. His family who were down there were very pleased. The other goal was to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society. We wont have the final tot up for a few days as money is still coming in but the final amount will be over €6000  which is fantastic. So well done!

Myself and Gavin would like to thank a few people .............

Are you looking for a challenge or goal to work towards so you stay motivated? Would it help if what you did raised money for charity at the same time? Maybe you’re looking for a race to set a PB! Well look no further than the John Davis Run 2008 in Malahide Castle on March the 1st. The Race is open to all members and also to other clubs, both Triathlon and Athletic. Read on for further details…

The Race

The John Davis Run is a 5km run race taking place on Saturday 1st March in the grounds of Malahide Castle. John Davis was a huge figure in Irish athletics over the past 20+ years who sadly passed away in 2007. John worked with many clubs throughout his time in the sport and we are staging the race to honour his incredible input and commitment. All money raised from entries and sponsorship will go to the Irish Cancer Society.

The Location

Malahide Castle, set on 250 acres of park land in the pretty seaside town of Malahide, was both a fortress and a private home for nearly eight hundred years. The Talbot family lived here from 1185 to 1973, when the last Lord Talbot died.

The Course

The course is a mixture of trail, path and road around the perimeter of the Castle grounds. It will begin and end in front of the castle itself. The route has no major hills, but is rarely flat as it winds around the grounds. You can see the course map here

How do I enter?

Entries are limited as this is the inaugural event so you are encouraged to enter quickly as we expect the event to sell out quickly. Entries are now live here . You need to be over 16 to enter.

What do I get for entering?

The entry fee is €20 which will include your race entry, t-shirt and drinks/snacks at the finish line. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Irish Cancer Society, and you can raise further money by downloading and filling in a sponsorship form for the event. Ask around at home or in the office and bring along any money you raise on the day. Prizes will be given to the people that have raised the most money. There will also be prizes for 1st/2nd/3rd place, for both male and female athletes.

How to Get There:

By bus: Bus 42 from city centre. By train: Suburban rail and DART from Connolly Station to Malahide.

By car: From Dublin Airport - on leaving at the roundabout take the second exit. At the Airport roundabout take the first exit onto the R132 (signpost for Belfast here). At Cloghran roundabout take the second exit onto the Dublin Road – R132 (signpost for Belfast here). Continue straight onto the R132. At Pinnock Hill Roundabout take the second exit onto the R132 (signpost for Belfast here). At the Malahide Road roundabout take the third exit onto the Swords Road – R106 (signpost for Malahide here). Continue straight on this road and take the first exit on the next roundabout onto the Swords Road. Continue straight along this road for approx one mile, turn right at the traffic lights onto the R107. Take the next turn left onto the Back Road and the next turn left into the grounds of Malahide Castle.

From city centre - start at the Daniel O’Connell monument on O’Connell Street, turn left onto Amiens Street – R105 (signpost for Malahide, Howth and Fairview here). Go straight through traffic lights onto North Strand Road R105, continue on this road for approx .5 miles then turn left at the traffic lights onto the Malahide Road – R107, continue straight on this road until you reach your first roundabout. Take the second exit on this roundabout onto the Malahide Road, continue straight until you reach another roundabout, take the second exit onto the Malahide Road (signpost for Malahide here). Go straight through the traffic lights continuing on the Malahide Road, you will reach Kinsealy, keep going straight and you will reach Feltrim and then Malahide. Turn right onto the Back Road and take the next turn left into the grounds of Malahide Castle.

Sponsors

We are currently recruiting sponsors  for the event. If you are interested please contact malahidecastle5k@gmail.com. A big thank you to all the sponsors currently on board!

Hi guys,

This is the first year we've tried to plan a Club Running race that is official instead of a training run in the park, and felt it was ideal to use it as an event to remember John by and also to raise money in his name to help Cancer suffurers in Ireland. Ideally we'd love to have as many Piranha's involved as possible, so if you're free on the 1st of March make sure you sign up for it soon before the numbers fill up! There'll be spot prizes for most money raised, best dressed and also trophies for the top performers in the club, as well as lots of muffins and lattes once we finish! So get on the website and put your name down for it! Its ideal distance to sharpen up before Ballycotton or if you are a newcomer to the club to start out at or if you didn't want to race and wanted to help out email me at duffyshuffle@gmail.com either!

Thanks,

Gav

Right Gavin I'm in! Just entered.....

Seeing as we'll all have earned a drink or two that night I thought that would be a good night to have my "extension warming party". So put the date in your diary and I hope to see as many Piranhas as possible that night - I live in Beaumont/Whitehall area so thats handy for the Northsiders and you Southsiders have plenty of time to get your papers in order before March 1st...

Will put up another post with all the info closer to the date...

hi all,

Just wanted to echo what Gav has said. We were both pretty dissappointed when we got the details of entries so far last week. The sign up from piranhas was very low . Its a club race so we kinda expected its members to take part in it  :)  I know people might have other things on that day or weekend, which is totally acceptable. In that case can you drop Gav an email and let him know. You might be able to help with something small in the lead up to the race. You could even donate the 20€ if you wanted.

If you are new to the club or sport dont worry as its a fun run so all standards wil be taking part. Non triathlon friends are welcome to join u in the race if you want too.

So if you can take part please enter today or tommorrow.

Thanks

Frank

ps I make no apologies for the Hard sell :) for 2 reasons  (a) the race needs to be a success as it is a memorial to John Davis, piranha former coach and (b) to raise a lot of cash for the irish cancer society.

Hi

Is the race full at this stage...went online and tried to enter but not sure i managed it...not very technologically minded here...I assume I should have given some sort of visa details but didn't get that far.  If its full I'm happy to help out on the day.
