I know most of you are preoccupied with training and racing at this time of year but preparations for our very own Dublin City Triathlon are at an advanced stage, with the race a mere six weeks away on Sunday 24th August. This is the chance for Piranha members to repay all those other clubs whose races we participate in by staging another fantastic race in Dublin, following the successful running of DCT over the last number of years. As you are probably aware, it is also a vital part of the success and continuation of the club for the year ahead. Read on for a summary of the major developments and also for an important notice for all club members about racing and volunteers...

Sponsorship: Gatorade's generous headline sponsorship continues this year and we have also secured sponsorship for each of the three legs of the race. Aquasphere are sponsoring the swim leg and Cyclesuperstore have agreed to continue their sponsorship of the bike leg, as well as providing mechanical support on race day/registration. I'd also like to welcome Runways on board as they sponsor the run leg for the first time. We have also secured great spot prizes from Aquasphere, Catherina McKiernan's Chi running, Winning Solutions and Irishfit.ie. In addition, CSS will be doing mechanical sort for the race at registration and pre race.

Race Promotion: While the race is filling fast there are still places available. With this in mind we have produced posters for members to display at their local gym, pool, running club, office, work place etc. They are available from any committee member or for collection at swim training. Also check out our ad on 220magazine.com.

Olympic Dream Relay Team: In association with Paddy Power, we have arranged for 3 olympians to race as a relay team against the clock in this year's race. Chantal Gibney (Sidney 2000), Ciaran Power (Sydney and Athens 2004) and Catherina McKiernan (Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Irish marathon record holder) will be set a target time and Paddy Power will donate 1000euro to Cancer research for every minute under they achieve under the target of 2hrs 10 mins. (Race participants and volunteers can donate also).

Course Video: Matt Naughton has produced a superb course video, introducing the race in its Liffey/Pheonix park location and tracing the bike course in high speed. See the DCT site for the link, it's definitely worth a look.

Volunteers: As mentioned above, the running of the race is a vital part of the successful running of Piranha triathlon club, as well as a chance to give something back to the wider triathlon community in Ireland. It would be impossible to organize and stage without the cooperation and time of club members. After discussion at last year's club AGM, the club committee decided that unfortunately no club member could race Dublin City Triathlon if we wanted to continue with the running of Piranha in the same form. It was also decided that, in the interests of fairness, all club members would agree to volunteer in some capacity as a condition of (re)joining back in January, each member having to sign a form to that effect. I know that many people would love to race DCT, since it is a Dublin race and a great event in a fantastic location, but the necessities of running the club and being even handed mean that this is impossible.

That said, I feel that together as a club we can organize a great race day and enjoy the event from the inside. With this in mind, Liz Lee, who is in charge of volunteers, will be in contact to check on your availability and to assign roles and tasks for the race. If you have any ideas concerning the race, need any more information or have points you wish to discuss, please feel free to contact me by email through the club website or via info@dublincitytriathlon.com. I'm looking forward to working with all club members over the coming weeks and on race weekend, to produce a fantastic race and to have an enjoyable time in the process. Thanks, Greg Campbell Race Director, Dublin City Triathlon 2008
