    Hi Bernard

I may be able to help.

I have a Quintana Roo Tequila size 55 full tri bike (the spec 49cm seat tube, 54cm top tube, 11cm hed tube) picture is available. it fits me fine and I am 5f 9in.

    Picture is available if necessary.

As coincidence would have it,I raced it in the California 70.3 in Oceanside a few years back!

I thought about Aix-enProvence but on looking at the map of the event, the swim/T1 area is quite a distance from the T2/BIke start and there is a Bus Transfer etc.

    Hence decided against.

John is home in 14h 26m

I just watched him cross the line on the Race TV easily recognised promoting DCT in the white shirt with red logo.

Mega tough day given the non wetsuit swim and temperatures.

    Massive effort, John!

Not attempting a PB since the bike will be tough.

Hope to see some of you there!

    Just IMHO

I have had a few over the years but have stuck with the Garmin 500 (which is mainly a Bike computer). Garmin offer a newer 510 version but still offer the 500 because cyclists like the unit more then the newer one.

Also I have a garmin strap that can hold the 500 when runnning so I train and race with the single unit for both Bike and run. (will be using it in Roth). The 510 is probably a bit big for running with.

The 500 is probably the cheapest of the fully functional bike GPS computers and is being discounted now that the 510 is here.

I have found doing a straight marathon to be more daunting and harder to recover than from IM distance. The actual run in an IM is quite different to a straight marathon (IMHO). IM running has so many aid stations and one tends to run between them which helps break up the run. Also the act of walking through the aid stations gives your leg muscles a brief break and this significantly helps recovery. (This affect is the basis of the “Galloway” marathon method which recommends brief walks every few miles in a marathon run)

So no worries if you have not run a Marathon! Go for it!

    Hi Dario

Hops to see you in Roth.

The site you mention has some very interesting functionality for those who ride with a power meter and thanks for the heads-up on this site since I find it very interesting and useful.

I have set up a trial account with them and downloaded some of the courses that are in their system. This includes ROTH as a Verified course [meaning it has been tested for accuracy] and other courses which others have either loaded up after riding them or created using mapping software such as “Map My Ride”.

Where it gets interesting is that once you have your Functional Power Threshold (“FTP”), you can download the course, say what type of bike/wheels etc you use and what “Intensity Factor” you want to ride at. [e.g. 75% for Iron distance, i.e your normalised power avegages 75% of your FTP]

Then their software will create a Garmin Course for you and then when you ride the course [using a Garmin 500/510/800/810], it will tell you [with pop up banners and a chime] what power to ride at which will depend on the gradient and wind direction [you need to enter this also]. The intervals of differing power can be as short as 30 seconds up to 9 mins in my experience.

The wind direction stuff might be a bit OTT but I have tried this on both the Swiss Half IM course and also Lough Cutra Half and it does seem to give appropriate targets judging by the terrain.

Certainly something to consider to prevent over-cooking the Bike split in Roth!

    Happy Miles!
